of power struggle between Emperor Guangxu and the Empress Dowager CIxi
intertwined with the romance between Emperor Guangxu and his favourite
concubine Zhen Fei towards the end of the Qing Dynasty (AD1644 - 1911).
The power struggle centres on the futile Reform Movement initiated by
Emperor Guangxu in 1898 to save China, which at that time was
politically, socially, and financially at its lowest ebb. The Reform
Movement, however, lasted only 100 days as it was nibbed in the bud by
Empress Dowager Cixi and resulted in the untimely death of both Zhen Fei
and Emperor Guangxu.
The Reform Movement was one of the most famous episodes in the
modern history of China. Had it succeeded, the course of history of
China in the 20th century and thereafter might have been different. For
the first time, the passing of Emperor Guangxu, which has been a subject
of controversy and research by scholars, is depicted on stage. The
opera has a big cast led by See Too Hoi Siang, winner of the prestigious
"The Outstanding Young Person In The World Award" for cultural
achievement, as Zhen Fei, Frances Wong Kum Yeng as Emperor Guangxu, Lo
Siu Ling as Empress Dowager Cixi, and Chan Mei Yin as Kang You Wei.
Subtitles in both Chinese and English will be used.
