FACILITATORMr Tan Ooh ChyePrincipal of the Chinese Opera Institute since 2011.Mr Tan received his training in business and management from the National University of Singapore and the University of Paisley. After working in the banking industry for more than 13 years, Mr Tan switched his career into education from year 2000 and is now a senior lecturer as the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.Besides his career in banking and education, Mr Tan has been an Chinese opera fan since young and is able to perform many Chinese musical instruments. He started composing Teochew opera in 1991 and has since been very active in the Chinese opera circle.The Chinese Opera Institute (COI) was established in June 1995 as a non-profit organisation with the support of the National Arts Council. The COI holds talks and courses throughout the year to encourage opera practitioners to expose themselves to different genres and techniques in Chinese opera, as well as to familiarise and educate the public on Chinese opera. COI also provides platform for Chinese Opera groups of difference genres to showcase their talents. The most recent one is the 2-day Chinese Opera Extravaganza in year 2015, which attracted 9 CO groups putting up 10 performances.The efforts that COI has put in are recognized by both local and overseas arts organisations. Our artistes and the student performers were invited to perform in countries like Thailand, India, Italy and so forth, and received tremendous good response.
