White Lycra is a Tokyo-based charity cycling team. The riders are mainly executives, none of whom
ride for a living, some who wish to lose a few pounds, and many more who have
long said good-bye to their youth! Yet they all have two things in common; they
have a passion for riding bikes, and wish to support those who are less
fortunate.
The group was formed by Expat Executives with the objective of raising funds
and awareness for community-based projects in Japan. Their first charity ride
in 2013 raised Y2.7 Million for the Tohoku-based Save Minamisoma Project.
In 2014, twenty cyclists from four countries including the first lady to
participate, rode 500kms from Tokyo to Minamisanriku. raising Y5.5 million (approx. US$55,000) for
O.G.A. for Aid. The funds built a vegetable processing factory in Minamisanriku,
creating employment and a sustainable business.
KIWL is
delighted to announce that they shall ride to Minamisanriku again in May 2015
to assist O.G.A. for Aid in raising funds for their 2015 project, ''Place to
Grow''. A 30-rider peloton representing six countries shall again make the
500km trek north with the aim of raising Y5.5 Million.
The objective of ''Place to Grow'' is to establish an educational space in
Tohoku with a focus on agriculture for younger generations to learn about the
farming process, encouraging them to remain in the region, create employment,
and build a long-term sustainable business. The space will also provide a haven
for children living in one room temporary accommodation to escape the
claustrophobia, to have a little ''me'' time.
