IET Rail Section Presents: Communication Backbone Networks for MRT Applications

Speaker Bio:

Siong Hin How is the System Manager leading a team of engineers in the implementation of Communication Backbone Networks (CBN) solutions for MRT and LRT project in Singapore as well as overseas as part of the Communications Systems projects being executed by Singapore Technologies Electronics. He graduated in EEE from NTU, Singapore. Hin How has nearly 15 years of experience in implementation of CBN for various MRT and LRT projects in Singapore as well as overseas. He is very knowledgeable in the various CBN technologies and their applicability to MRT domain. He underwent training by well-known system providers such as Alcatel-Lucent, ECI, CISCO and Extreme NW.


CBN plays in a key role in ensuring reliable voice, data and video communication between various locations on the MRT such as Stations, Depot(s), Operation Control Center(s) and Sub-stations. The CBN is used not only by the Communications Systems but also by other systems such as SCADA, AFC and Traction Power to support their communications needs between respective systems at various locations. The CBN has to accommodate a variety of interfaces from analog voice to Ethernet and varying data rates from a few Kilobits/sec to several hundred Megabits/sec. Another key aspect of the CBN is its resilience, reliability and availability.

During the talk, Hin How will briefly explain the various CBN technologies and the evolution of implementations specifically in relation to the MRT applications. He will discuss the various system architectures and configurations along with key aspects such as system interfaces, bandwidth utilization and performance.
