"Under One Roof" - Reimagining Bishan

Poplarised by the TV series "Under One Roof" in the 90s, the sloping roofs of Bishan's flats actually reflect the heritage of a Chinese cemetery named "Peck San Theng" or "Pavilions on the Jade Hills" in Cantonese. In the last 50 years, Bishan has changed greatly from its days as a cemetery and kampong to today's New Town. While this typifies the glossy transformation from "Third World to First," it represents so much more than a single narrative of progress. Instead, it is a vibrant patchwork of stories from all who live, work and play in it. As we bring you to familiar landmarks that most walk past without a second thought, we will shed light on these stories, through conversations on the people and history of Bishan. We hope to provide insight into the different meanings this place holds to different people today - from historical significance to personal sentimentality.
