Wang Tong)148 min | Taiwan | Mandarin with Chinese and English subtitles Rating: NC16Tempted by tales of sweet bananas, a naïve young man follows the Kuomintang forces from China to Taiwan in 1949. He adopts false names and adjusts to life in Taiwan amidst turbulent socio-economic changes. Banana Paradise addresses the cruelties of martial law as a tragicomic melodrama, rural-urban migration, and the demands of modernisation. Director Wang Tong was a veteran in set design for directors including King Hu, Li Hsing and Pai Jing-jui before making his feature film debut in 1981. His works can be situated between the generational shift, combining sentimentality with socio-political critique. Introduction and Post-screening discussion with Dr Hong Guo-Juin (Assoc Prof, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Duke University) &Dr Elizabeth Wijaya (Asst Prof of East Asian Cinema, Department of Visual Studies, University of Toronto)CLICK HERE FOR TRAILERShowtimes:27 July, Saturday - 8pmTo Note:- All film screenings are held at Oldham Theatre, National Archives of Singapore. - Tickets can be purchased at the Oldham Theatre Box Office. The settings of the films span the Ming dynasty, the Sino-Japanese war and its aftermath, colonial and postcolonial modernity, revolution and resistance and martial law in Taiwan.Against the broad strokes of political history, these films reveal the internal conflicts, melodrama and class divisions of migratory lives in exile and alienation. The films themselves are also made in critical times for cinema history with their own histories of loss, rebirth and restoration. As lives and desire collide with the forces of history in fictional frames, what can be revealed about the intersecting forces of production that condition how history can be affectively archived and re-activated in aesthetic works? About ReframeAn initiative by the Asian Film Archive, Reframe is a series that aims to bring together diverse audiences and the film community at large through an innovative range of programmes, encouraging dialogue and examining topics surrounding cinema and the moving image.By asking the hard questions and re-looking at trends and issues critically, the series will construct meaningful frameworks that bring forth multi-perspective viewpoints and an increased appreciation of film and culture.
