He started traditional Malay dance under the guidance of his parents, Mazlina Buang and Noorazwa Mohd Joz. At 16, he decided to pursue dance at the department of dance of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) where he was exposed to dance forms such as ballet and contemporary dance. As an alumni of the department, he also performed for Everything and Nothing; a piece by James Cousins, winner of the inaugural Matthew Bourne New Adventures Choreographer Award. In 2013, Afiq joined T.H.E second company and performed alongside T.H.E's main company in 'As It Fades' by Kuik Swee Boon. With T.H.E second company, he has performed works by Marcus Foo and Lee Mun Wai (Singapore), Sebastien Ledig (France) and Mikiko Kwamura (Japan). He has been actively performing and promoting with second company since. In 2018, he joined the main company and performed works by Kim Jae Duk and Humanhood. Unfortunately, due to a high risk medical condition, he left the main company to focus on recovery.Afiq is also actively involved in training, choreographing and performing with Atrika Dance Company. He serves as mainly a producer, trainer for contemporary techniques, choreographer and one of the leading dancers.A few phrases to describe Afiq are his love for unicorns, rainbow sprinkled ice cream and his amazingly dark humour. He has a knack for putting things, people, concepts and ideas together and creates works derived mainly from feelings, memories and personal experiences in various mediums; dance being his primary. Performing feels like home to him and the stage, to him, is a very very warm hug.
