Rather than being “aimed at children,” their body of work constitutes an attempt at seeing the world through a child’s eyes; overflowing with moments adults will find just as pleasurable and surreal, their performances never fail to incite outbursts of laughter from audiences of all ages. In 2013, spirited theater director Jetse Batelaan (born 1978 in the Netherlands) was appointed as the company’s artistic director. Absurd and indiscreet, radical and playful, his productions casually betray normative stereotypes of how theater should be staged or enjoyed, and unleash the imaginations of audiences from every generation. Contemporary society has been built on political and economic logic; Theater Artemis’s riotous ingenuity is pervaded by a playfulness and criticality which point out and disrupt its contradictions.
