Explore how thoughtful conservation and urban design are used to create enjoyable public spaces that not only hark back to a colourful past, but also seek to entice people to stay and play on the streets, which was what Jane Jacobs had in mind for how city streets are supposed to be like. On this Walk, partake in discussions about Singapore's conservation efforts and what your idea of the ideal city is like. The Walk will end with a visit to the URA City Gallery, where we'll have a glimpse into the future of Singapore, and see how you yourself can contribute to urban planning in Singapore! Walk Notes1. Kindly arrive 15 minutes before the start of the walk so that the walk can begin on time.2. There will be issues for people in wheelchairs or with prams, as many of the older places have steps and bumps. About the Walk LeaderDarren is an urban planner by weekday, and a tour guide by weekend. He loves Tanjong Pagar, because there is so much colourful history and culture in the nooks and crannies of its winding alleyways! In fact, he loves this conserved historic area so much he leads 5-hour (yes, 5 hours) walking tours, a big part of which traverses Tanjong Pagar, every Saturday afternoon. There is just so much to see and hear about in this part of the city! Last year, he led a Jane’s Walk of Duxton Hill and its winding streets, uncovering its fascinating heritage to participants. He shared how conservation in Singapore can be used to create enjoyable public spaces that also hark back to a colourful past - a marrying of past, present, and future. One highlight on last year's tour was seeing how art installations, as part of a temporary urban design festival, were used to bring out just how usable our beautiful alleyways can be.
