[Film Screening] The Missing Picture (L'image Manquante) (2013) by Rithy PanhIntroduction by Dr Carl Grundy-Warr - 7pm - 7.15pm, Film Screening - 7.15pm - 9pmNgee Ann Kongsi Auditorium, Education Resource Centre, Level 2, University Town, NUS.The Missing Picture is director Rithy Panh’s act of remembrance and witness to the atrocities carried out during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. Embracing storytelling in its more fundamental but no less provocative form, the narrative of Panh and his family’s ordeal is embodied by hand-carved clay figurines interspersed with photographs, snippets of old songs, and news footage. Beyond serving as a repository for memory and catalogue of violence, the film is a re-enactment, reclamation and ultimately resistance against the national and personal trauma that still lingers within the Cambodian consciousness to this day. This film was nominated for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards in 2014, and is the winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. About the film seriesConsisting of several films opened by Dr Carl Grundy-Warr from the NUS Department of Geography, Two Sides of the Same Lens is a film series that posits a reading of three NUS Museum exhibitions, Homeless, Crossings, and Of Place and a Paradox. Here, the macrocosmic fabric of geopolitics is interwoven with the threads of personal narratives to make up our contemporary “tipping point” issues.
