Embracing storytelling in its more fundamental but no less provocative form, the narrative of Panh and his family’s ordeal is embodied by hand-carved clay figurines interspersed with photographs, snippets of old songs, and news footage. Beyond serving as a repository for memory and catalogue of violence, the film is a re-enactment, reclamation and ultimately resistance against the national and personal trauma that still lingers within the Cambodian consciousness to this day. This film was nominated for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards in 2014, and is the winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. About the film seriesConsisting of several films opened by Dr Carl Grundy-Warr from the NUS Department of Geography, Two Sides of the Same Lens is a film series that posits a reading of three NUS Museum exhibitions, Homeless, Crossings, and Of Place and a Paradox. Here, the macrocosmic fabric of geopolitics is interwoven with the threads of personal narratives to make up our contemporary “tipping point” issues. Departing from archetypal media representations, the films also serve as possible frames from which individual agency, historical reclamation, and communal determination in a time of forced displacement and mass exodus can be constructed.Image: Filming, a scene from The Missing Picture.
