What came before it, who lived there, and what was life like? This April, join former Siglap estate residents Hema Kiruppalini and Mindy Tan on a walking tour through the streets of Siglap as they recount memories and forgotten stories of the neighbourhood and its only HDB estate. Fun facts on street names and the geography of Siglap included! Unsettled by the news of the demolition Siglap, Hema and Mindy set out to record residents’ memories of the HDB estate, and collected it into a single volume, Siglap at the Crossroads: Memories of Its Only HDB Estate. The book will be available for sale at the end of the tour. About the guides Hema Kiruppalini has lived in the East Coast‐Marine Parade area since young. Although she was a resident of the Siglap housing estate for just a few years, the meaningful friendships she forged made it a place that held special significance for her. She is currently pursuing her PhD in History at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with research interest on the Nepalese Gurkha community. Prior to this, she worked as a Research Associate at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), Singapore. Mindy Tan is a journalist who never thought of applying her writing skills to a passion project. But when the opportunity to document this sliver of history, and combine both a love for writing and photography arose, it was an easy yes. Having lived in Siglap for over two decades, the area holds a special place in her heart. She is a recent postgraduate from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.
