Founded in 1910 by a group of Cantonese businessmen, KWSH provided free medical services to poor immigrants. The hospital began operations in 1911 at 705 Serangoon Rd, taking over Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s wards there. Four of these buildings have been awarded conservation status by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, which recognises their historical significance The tour continues at the Kwong Wai Shiu Peck San Theng. Before Bishan became the bustling town it is today, it was known as the "Peck San Theng" cemetery, which was established in 1870 by the Kwong Wai Siew federation. Over the decades, Kampong San Teng was established around the cemetery grounds.
