Back by popular demand, learn more about Raffles' time in Java and the Malay world in this after-hours tour with one of the exhibition curators. Examine the Raffles collections from the British Museum, along with materials from Java and Johor-Riau-Lingga, and hear behind-the-scenes stories about setting up the exhibition.This special tour happens after-hours, when the museum is closed to the public. Entry is solely for registered participants, and tour fees cover access to all galleries. About curator, Naomi WangAssistant Curator, Southeast Asia, ACMNaomi holds a BA in Art History from the University of Toronto. She joined the Singapore Art Museum in 2012, with a focus on Mainland Southeast Asia. At the ACM, she specialises in Southeast Asia, with a particular interest in the formation of Malay sultanates and the metalworking traditions from the early modern period. Before Raffles, she co-curated the special exhibition Port Cities: Multicultural Emporiums of Asia, 1500-1900. About the exhibitionSir Stamford Raffles was an official with the British East India Company stationed in Southeast Asia between 1805 and 1824. He is known for establishing Singapore as a British port, as the author of The History of Java, and as a collector of natural history and cultural materials. Opinions of Raffles have changed over time. He has been viewed as a scholarly expert on the region, a progressive reformer, a committed imperialist, and even a plagiariser. In keeping with the Asian Civilisations Museum's mission to explore encounters and connections, this exhibition presents a complex, multilayered picture of Raffles while presenting the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Java and the Malay world. Raffles in Southeast Asia: Revisiting the Scholar and Statesman will be exhibited from 1 February to 28 April 2019. The presentation of this exhibition is a collaboration between the British Museum and the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore.A minimum of 10 people is needed to proceed. Registration closes a day before the tour and tickets are non-refundable if participant is unable to attend. If the event is cancelled, full ticket-price refund will be given.
