Using remittance letters sent home by early Chinese migrant workers in Singapore as a point of departure, this exhibition moves beyond understanding ‘intimacies’ as merely about feelings between people. A consideration of the material and medial qualities of letters points to a broader conceptualisation of ‘intimacy’ as the continual process of attachment and detachment — a mode of maintaining ever-shifting closeness or distance to different objects, subjects and worlds. To think about intimacies is therefore to think about one’s relative position in space.
