Visual artist Robert Zhao Renhui and documentary photographer Ore Huiying tackle this question with references to their own photography practice.
Robert Zhao Renhui:
Singaporean visual artist Robert Zhao Renhui works mainly with photography but often adopts a multi-disciplinary approach by presenting images together with documents and objects. His work includes textual and media analysis, video, photography and book projects. Zhao's has been shown and published widely in museums, art biennales, photo festivals and art publications across the world, and his accolades include The Deutsche Bank Award in Photography (2011) by the University of the Arts London, The United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Award (2009) Singapore, and The Young Artist Award by the Singapore National Arts Council.View his works here: http://www.criticalzoologists.org/
Ore Huiying:
Ore Huiying is a documentary photographer from Singapore. Her practice revolves around storytelling, which she believes is basic to human beings. Ore is drawn to narratives of people and places affected by development. She strives to discover a pattern to cope with the experience of chaos and confusion, both of her subjects and of her own. Her photography is focused on investigating the progression of Southeast Asian societies in the global context.Apart from her personal projects, she has been commissioned by international publications like Bloomberg, Le Monde newspaper, M magazine and Getty Images. Ore is part of the World Press Photo 6×6 Global Talent Program, and her work has been exhibited in photo festivals, museums and galleries regionally and internationally. She was a nominee for ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu, and most recently won the Documentary Award at the Invisible Photographer Asia Photography Awards.
Tom White:
Tom White studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, and Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. He has taught classes at Columbia University’s School of Journalism and at the International Center of Photography. He has also worked extensively with the ICP’s Community Programs department, teaching darkroom photography classes and working with youth on a post incarceration/at risk program.
