Gabrielle Brady's debut feature is a searing look at refugee politics, told through the eyes of Poh Lin, a trauma counsellor who has the seemingly impossible task of supporting the island's detainees.  Stories of the refugees' unbearable, untenable situation play out against the richly textured natural rhythms and traditions of the island, as millions of crabs make their journey to the sea and the local Chinese community marks the Hungry Ghost Festival. Gabrielle studied direction at the Cuban International Film School (EICTV), where she lived and made films for three years. For the past 10 years Gabrielle has lived between Cuba, Mongolia, Indonesia, the Australian central desert and Europe. Her short film Island was commissioned as part of the Guardian documentary series and premiered at the 2017 Sheffield festival. Island of the Hungry Ghosts is her first feature-length film.  About the speakers:Kin Chui is an artist based in Singapore. He obtained an MA in Fine Art (2014) from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, and has since been involved in a number of anti-discriminatory initiatives including projects addressing the topic of migrant and refugee rights. He was also one of the eight cinematographers who won Best Cinematography at the Singapore International Film Festival's Singapore Film Award in 2009 for the Lucky 7 project.   Nurul Huda Rashid is an educator, writer and image-maker. Lecturing in different subjects across Anthropology, Liberal and Visual Arts, she commutes across different classrooms with a love for facilitation and performance. She is also a researcher whose interests focus on issues concerning the visual and sentient body, visual imagery and methodologies, narratives (text and the telling), and feminism. This often ties up with notions of identity, both as expressed through Self and Other. Her research interests are manifested through different mediums, in both text and the visual.
