Everyone loves both its quaint old world charm and its modern "hipster" image.We will take a walk around this charming and picturesque neighbourhood to explore both its pre-war and post-war architecture, including one of Singapore's oldest public housing estates, with its row after row of art deco buildings, and learn about the history and stories associated with them.You will also learn more about Tiong Bahru’s rich heritage from stories of prominent pioneer community leaders to residents who were born in the air raid shelter during World War II, to religion and rituals, culture and food, and more.The transformation from swamp to swank began in the 1930s, and some of the landmarks from that era still stand today, including the residential blocks and the first Monkey God Temple dedicated to the main character from Chinese literary classic Journey to the West.A special treat awaits us on this tour as it is the Monkey God’s Birthday, which falls on the January 16th of the Lunar month. Be amazed by the sights and sounds around temple ground: streams of devotees, highly ornate offerings, stage performance dedicated to the gods.
