A British Council 'Knowledge is GREAT' Lectureby:Alfredo Saad-Filho Professor of Political Economy and Head of the Doctoral SchoolSOAS, University of LondonAbout the Lecture:The global economy is mired in crisis: the deepest economic collapse since the Great Depression has been followed by a ‘Great Stagnation’ with no end in sight. In rapid sequence, democracies around the world started to succumb to a wave of authoritarianism without precedent in the postwar era. This session will review the causes, severity and implications of the overlapping crises of global politics and the global economy, discuss their implications for developing countries in various regions, including Southeast Asia, and suggest strategies to support democratic and distributive economic policies.Timings and Location:The Lecture will take place on Thursday 17 January 2019. He was a Senior Economic Affairs officer at UNCTAD, in Geneva, in 2011-2012. Alfredo has degrees in Economics from the Universities of Brasília (Brazil) and London (UK), and has taught in universities and research institutions in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mozambique, Switzerland and the UK.
