This talk is excerpted from a talk given in 2018 at NUS and would be of interest to art students, educators, and anyone interested in Singapore's early struggles in building a foundation for the arts. 2019 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society (SEACS)—a society dedicated to promote appreciation and knowledge of the ceramic art of the region, and especially Southeast Asia. Its founder was the then-curator of the NUS Museum of Art, William Young Willetts. This talk launches its 50th anniversary lecture series which will include a wide range of topics ranging from the latest marine archaeological finds to how to collect and appreciate ceramics.  Members' activities and programmes are free to all SEACS members; come, join, and enjoy a year's worth of programmes. Join today at www.seaceramic.org.sg or join at any public programme.  -----The photograph (1967 or 1968) of a visit to a local temple shows Mr. William Willetts (right of the Reverend Seck KONG Hiap) wearing his famous 'Bombay Bloomer' shorts.
