In Singapore, the Peranakans are mainly a mix of the rich cultures resulting from the marriage of early Chinese traders and local Malay and Indian women. Their love of colour, patterns and sheer drama is evidenced in their material culture (for instance, their colourful beading and clothing styles) and in their beliefs as well. Join us for a walk through one the most distinctive Peranakan enclaves in Singapore. Set on former coconut plantations where attap-roofed kampongs once thrived nearby to seaside bungalows and mansions for the wealthy, Katong and Joo Chiat are an exciting mélange of culture, flavours and architecture. We’ll meet some of the local characters and explore their legacy and we’ll of course focus on the lovely pre-war architecture —namely the rows and rows of colourful two-storey shophouses and terrace houses adorned with ornate façades, intricate motifs and ceramic tiles. We will also visit the Chinese temple of Guan Yin, Goddess of Mercy and Compassion; discover an old Anglican church with its closely-knit community; and pop into one of Singapore’s oldest Indian temples — all three a reminder of the area’s multi-ethnic blend. To top it off, we’ll be sure to make time to sample some local drinks and snacks at one of the few traditional eateries that dot the neighbourhood. Please note confirmation of this tour includes the exact meeting place and will be sent by email to all those registered about 24 hours in advance; this will be preceded by a Peatix message to all registered. Happy guests on past Tuesday Walking Tours are saying…….“I have been on many of Jane’s Tours, they are informative, fun, fascinating, just a true pleasure to spend time discovering this wonderful island.
