As the largest South Asian social justice organization at the University of Michigan, the South Asian Awareness Network (SAAN) works to elevate South Asian voices and creates a platform for thoughtful engagement and innovative solutions to generate social change. Our 2019 Conference: Shifting Sands is a one day event running from 8:30AM to 4:30PM on Saturday, January 19th.We strive to look inwards as a group by acknowledging the privileges we may hold, challenging our own biases, learning from the experiences of others, and exploring the contexts that have brought us to where we are. From this effort, we hope to collaborate with those who are engaging in similar work on this campus to build lasting community. We aim to maintain spaces that challenge the dominant narrative and support those who are not given the opportunity to tell their stories.Check-in for the conference will begin at 8:30 AM in Rackham Graduate School, and you will receive your schedule and conference shirt at this time. The program includes two keynotes and two workshops with corresponding dialogues. Our featured speakers are from all over the world, and engage in various avenues of social justice through their career paths. The keynotes and workshops will be hosted at the Michigan League. Breakfast will be provided at 8:30AM on Saturday, and a lunch featuring South Asian cuisine will also be provided during the day. Both meals will be at Rackham, and all of the above are included in your ticket price. There will be a formal reception celebrating the conclusion of the conference on Saturday evening at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) at 8:00PM.Our speakers for conference will be revealed on our Facebook page so keep an eye out for them.
