Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Concert begins at 8 p.m. Armen Donelian, pianist/composer has had an enviable 40-year career. Donelian apprenticed with a series of jazz giants starting in 1975 with Mongo Santamaria, where he presided over the piano chair once filled by Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Two years later, Sonny Rollins recruited him as a sideman for several tours. Donelian has consistently explored his Armenian roots in his music and recorded for several labels with the Middle Eastern jazz ensemble Night Ark and he co-produced (with producer George Avakian) Listen to My Heart, a collection of jazz interpretations of Armenian folk songs. Or Tucsonjazzfest@gmail.com Concert sponsored byAngelo Versace, piano, was the winner of the 2012 Phillips Jazz Piano Competition and his playing has graced the stages of the North Sea, New Orleans and Mellon jazz festivals. Angelo has worked with internationally recognized artists: Sean Jones, Take 6, Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, Wycliffe Gordon, Dave Koz, Gloria Gaynor and Foreigner. Immediately out of high school, Versace was accepted on full scholarship to William Paterson University, where he graduated “Summa Cum Laude” with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance. He then completed a Master’s degree and a Doctor Musical Arts degree at the University of Miami, also under full scholarship. In the second year of his Master's degree he accepted the Jazz Piano Teaching Assistant Position. From 2009-2013 Versace was a Mancini Fellow and was awarded the piano chair in the Mancini Institute Orchestra under the direction of Terence Blanchard.
