Written by Brecht in 1944, The Caucasian Chalk Circle has since come
to be regarded as one of Brecht’s greatest plays and one of the most important
of the 20th century. This epic piece of theatre is a parable
involving the right of ownership – of land and of people. Who is the one who
best deserves ownership? Those whose claim is through position and status or
those who can nurture and offer enrichment and development? This highly theatrical, epic piece of theatre is
directed by Valeria Campo, a visiting artist with the Musical Theatre programme
in 2014. Valeria is a world expert in the Italian Commedia dell’arte, and will
be working with the level 2 students to incorporate mask work, songs, and other
elements of the Commedia into this inter-cultural adaptation of The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
