However, they can no longer make it, and Kokkorn Benjathikoon (who plays Pia) will be attending in their stead. Apologies for the change. Watch cult-classic LGBTQ movie The Iron Ladies alongside your friends at the T Project, Singapore’s only shelter for homeless transgender women, at this special screening and fundraiser! On Thursday, 6 December at National Gallery, Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is screening the beloved 2001 Thai movie with a special post-screening Q&A with director Yongyoot Thongkongtoon and cast member Kokkorn Benjathikoon (who plays Pia).In addition to the screening and Q&A, the T Project will be hosting a special pre-movie drinks reception outside the auditorium, from 6 – 7 p.m. This reception will only be open to holders of T Project tickets purchased through this page (i.e. not to holders of regular SGIFF tickets). Each T Project ticket holder will receive a complimentary glass of wine during this reception. The reception will be hosted by local drag queen DeEnormous. We are so excited to have her! In addition, T Project founder June Chua, as well as other T Project volunteers and community members, will be present at the reception—so you’ll get a chance to mingle, meet them, and discuss everything from trans community work to trans movies. All proceeds from our fundraiser ticket price will benefit the T Project. Since its founding in 2014, the T Project has been serving the needs of homeless transgender women in Singapore, who number amongst the most at-risk individuals in the country due to the challenges they face: addiction, mental illness, HIV, unemployment, statelessness, absence of family support, and risk of suicide. The T Project is entirely donor-supported, so the donation that your ticket comprises makes a huge difference to the shelter’s ongoing operations.Beyond the shelter, the T Project will soon open its brand-new Alicia Community Centre to the public. Alicia Community Centre will serve as a safe space for the trans/gender-nonconfirming population in Singapore. It will also host various workshops and events, feature a small trans library and history museum, and conduct unprecedented, much-needed research on the local transgender community. This is an exciting, important endeavour for the T Project, and we need all the help we can get to ensure its success!ABOUT THE FILM:A commercial and critical success in Thailand and abroad, The Iron Ladies is a fictionalised account of a historic 1996 team of gay and transgender athletes who won the men’s title at the Thai national volleyball championships.Shying away from melodrama, the film is a loving mix of laugh-out-loud comedy and sporting triumphs amidst a greater call for tolerance. It centres on the misadventures of talented volleyball players Mon and Jung as they struggle to find a team willing to accept their LGBTQ identities. The pair gain a second wind after the appointment of a new coach—who ends up building a diverse team of gay, transgender and straight players after the original team walks out.The Iron Ladies lovingly celebrates identities of all kinds in Southeast Asia. Don’t miss this chance to watch it in the presence of its brilliant creators! Please consider buying two or more tickets to the film, and bringing your friends—the more the merrier. (Tickets are free seating.) We can’t wait to see you there!INFO:Thursday 6 December6.00 p.m. (Reception)7.00 p.m. (Screening)--Thanks to Man About Town for co-presenting The Iron Ladies.
