There is a presumed fact that freedom is a universal idea: that individuals should be able to act without unjust constraint, with agency and autonomy. And yet freedom quite clearly means different things to different people. Does it mean from limiting constraints – for fear, from want, from discrimination, from violence? Or does it mean the freedom of choice, as neoliberalism would have it, to be delivered by an unfettered market? What kinds of alternative possibilities of action exist?
