Its compact form must be understood and appreciated. The translator must be conscious of the music of the words. And poetry’s use of images and metaphors also poses considerable interpretative problems. Join the poet, translator and National Literary Laureate, Muhammad Haji Salleh, in a discussion and workshop on the particular demands of translating Malay poetry. The workshop introduces the special characteristics of classical poetic forms such as pantun and syair, and invites participants to share creative strategies like the rhyming scheme, assonance, alliteration and melody. Examples from past renditions that focus on these challenges will be shared in advance and their strategies in solving translation problems will be discussed. Registered participants must be fluent in both Bahasa Malaysia and English and, ideally, have some previous experience in translating literary texts. This workshop is limited to 20 participants.Following registration, participants will be sent a pantun and a verse of a modern poem to translate. Translated texts are to be submitted to GTLF two weeks prior to the workshop. Important Dates1 October – Registration opens30 October – Registration closes 9 November – Submission of translations22 November – Workshop-------Muhammad Haji Salleh is a poet, critic, translator and editor, who has published over 50 books in both Malay and English.
