Conversations is a series of talks and panel discussion on topics regarding the social enterprise sector, social impact, and doing good in Singapore. We hope to spread awareness about social enterprises and social issues in Singapore, as well as engage members of the public in meaningful discussions about how we can make Singapore a better place for all. Session 3: Addressing Inequality Through Enterprise – How Can I Be Part of the Movement? (Panel Discussion) Leveraging social enterprises has been identified as one strategy to manage pressure points in Singapore. What role do social enterprises play in the alleviation of social needs? What have they been doing to assist various communities in need in society? What more can be done and where do individuals come in? Who Will Be In The Panel? Amanda Chong – Co-founder, ReadAbleReadAble is a non-profit organisation that runs literacy programmes for children and migrant women in a low-income neighbourhood. Amanda Chong, its co-founder, is a lawyer trained at Cambridge and Harvard, who writes poems on her lunch breaks. Her book Professions was shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize 2018. She co-founded ReadAble with the hope of beating poverty one word at a time. Li Woon Churdboonchart – Founder, The Volunteer SwitchboardThe Volunteer Switchboard is a hub for volunteers who want to contribute time and effort with VWOs and Charities. Li Woon is the founder of The Volunteer Switchboard and a Senior Vice President in the banking sector. She has almost 20 years of volunteering experience with various VWOs and spearheaded corporate volunteering in Citibank, Barclays and J.P. Morgan. She believes that volunteering should be mindful giving with a willing heart while sharing blessings generously with others.Wu Jiezhen - Executive Director, The Hidden GoodThe Hidden Good is a community-centered content platform that collaborates with advocates and partners to raise awareness on social issues and inspire action. Jiezhen is the Executive Director & #girlboss of The Hidden Good. She builds partnerships, grows communities, and ensures the sustainability and relevance of the organization, by making the good in the world less hidden. Her deep belief in every person’s idea to make a change in society powers the team at The Hidden Good. Truly a people person, she makes the connections to bring an idea to life. Jiezhen double majored in Political Science and Peace and Justice at Wellesley College, graduating with double honors and a concentration in education and international community development.Leonard Lim - Research Associate, Institute of Policy Studies, National University of SingaporeThe Institute of Policy Studies is an autonomous research centre of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. A research associate, Leonard’s research interests are in social mobility and income inequality. He is also interested in education policies and their role in fostering mobility. Leonard was previously assistant political editor at The Straits Times. There, he edited and covered a range of topics, including social policy, politics, education and sports. He holds a Masters (by Research) and Bachelor of Social Sciences (First Class Honours) in Economics from the National University of Singapore.Alfie Othman – CEO, raiSE The Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise (raiSE), headed by Alfie Othman, is a sector developer and membership body for the social enterprise sector in Singapore. Alfie has had a successful banking career of over twelve years in the banking sector. Alongside his private sector work, Alfie has devoted significant time to the public sector and civil society. He founded his own social enterprise and has served as advisor and mentor to many social enterprises in Singapore and in the region. Before raiSE, Alfie was the Executive Director of the Social Enterprise Association. Alfie is recognised as a Social Enterprise practitioner within Singapore. Since 2016, Alfie has been appointed as a Fellow at SUSS, providing advice on the emerging Fin Tech phenomenon.
