ACTIVATION DAY | 6 Oct
What is space activation and how can different design disciplines participate in ‘activating a place’? Space activists and place-making practitioners, Participate in Design, Shophouse & Co and Lopelab shed a light on ways of activating spaces through a talk and installations from a Singapore Polytechnic school programme.
1) DESIGNING WITH PEOPLE AND NOT JUST FOR PEOPLE Talk by Participate in Design (3pm – 3.30pm):
In recent times, citizen engagement and community participation have become key focal points. Singapore and many other cities recognise their growing importance, but have also encountered many concomitant challenges. What does participation mean, particularly for a city like Singapore, and how do people from all walks of life perceive it? In the sphere of design and planning, how might we participate more meaningfully in creating solutions for our built environment? Join Participate in Design as they share about their recent works and what it means to design with people and not just for them.
2) PLACEMAKING - THE SPARK FOR POSSIBILITIES Talk by Shophouse & Co (3.30pm – 4pm):
Discussions about the future of our cities often revolve around buzzwords like Innovation, Disruption, Liveability, and Loveability. Placemaking is the thread that runs through all of it. In this sharing, Shophouse & Co will share their experiences as the pioneer placemaking studio in Singapore. Through a selection of work from the past 5 years, they will also show how their projects have opened up possibilities about the future of our urban spaces.
3) DIY URBANISM
CITIES MADE BY PEOPLE FOR PEOPLE Talk and Q&A by LOPE LAB (4pm – 4.30pm):
D.I.Y. Urbanism, commonly referred to Guerilla Urbanism or Tactical Urbanism, is an umbrella term used to describe a collection of temporary transformations to cities, intended to improve local neighbourhoods and gathering places. At LOPELAB we specialise in the re-vitalisation of the public realm for communal purposes.
Be sure to also watch out for the ongoing TAG Space activation & Public Participation of Tape Art installation (12pm – 5pm):
Gentrification has become an inevitable by-product in order to keep Singapore ahead & relevant. However, this pulls in the opposite direction from Shared Identity, “Spirit of Place” & Conservation. TAG is an Art Installation which aims to spark awareness & conversations on the balance of these 2 aspects.
Come join the students of Singapore Polytechnic to have a hand in the Tape Art Installation!
* No registration is required for TAG.
* TAG is recreated in Archifest 2018 (originally at Kampong Glam in July 2018).
