SERIES OF SHORT TALKS BY YOUNG ARCHITECTS | 29 Sep

Description
Join the Series of Short Talks co-curated and moderated by SIA Young Architects League (YAL) at the Archifest Pavilion. We have invited 3 panels of young architects to give fresh perspectives on Design for Environment, Design for Time & Design for People in a dynamic exchange of ideas and a sharing of some of the smaller projects that they have worked on. Each talk session will be followed by a Q&A session.

WHAT IS THE KAMPONG HOUSE? | 2pm – 3pm
Design for Environment puts responsible and sustainable design at the forefront of architects’ and designers’ considerations. Through a series of short talks by young architects, explore how design can not only coexist but also enhance and aid our larger urban environments. The Kampong House is a traditional Malay house that has been the model of inspiration for many design projects, mostly implicitly rather than explicitly. Speakers will be sharing on some of the principles that can be extracted from the classic Kampong House typology, which seems to be ever-relevant especially in a developed society.

Chaw Chih Wen - Hyphen Architects
Calvin Chua - Spatial Anatomy
Felicia Toh - Quarters Architects

HOW TO REFURBISH A SHOPHOUSE | 3pm – 4pm
Design for Time promotes design solutions that are long-lasting and forward-thinking. Shophouses are examples of buildings that are meant to be preserved for the long haul, yet cannot be expected to remain unchanged. Similarly, buildings which have changed in usage over time require extra effort to maintain their integrity, especially if the change is drastic. Take part in a series of short talks that address how young architects and designers can plan for future generations and create spaces and buildings that evolve and adapt over time.

Austen Chan & Wu Huei Siang - WASAA Architects & Associates
Joseph Lee - Bhatch Architects

THE CURIOUS CASE OF POTTED PLANTS IN HDB | 4pm – 5pm
Design for People addresses various design challenges through a larger lens of human-centric considerations. Join us for a series of short talks by young architects and designers that focuses on everyday architecture and its potential to transform our daily lives. Potted plants, like many other things, gradually see an evolution according to the needs of its inhabitants. Some successful stories of HDB renovations and small scale projects will be shared, showing how each project is inspired by the people living in it, like fingerprints.

Iskandar Idris & April Tan - Super Assembly
Quek Li-En - Quen Architects
