バラキレフチャイコフスキー、リムスキー=コルサコフ、ムソルグスキー、ボロディンの音楽はよく耳にします。バラキレフは、五人組のリーダーであり、前述の作曲家全員が 、そして五人組の一員ではないチャイコフスキーでさえ、その影響を受けました。12月コンサートのチラシにバラキレフの写真がありますが、その表情はエネルギーに溢れ、吸い込まれるような力強い目をしています。リムスキー=コルサコフは海軍大尉、ムソルグスキーは官吏、ボロディンは化学者、バラキレフは数学者でした。五人組は献身的なアマチュア音楽家、音楽愛好家の集まりで、忙しい本業の合間を縫って、作曲に励みました。バラキレフは情熱的、献身的で、作曲家仲間に大きな影響を与えましたが、自身の作品数は少ないです。12月のコンサートで演奏する最初の交響曲は、完成までに24年間もかかっています。その長さからもバラキレフの性格がうかがえ、自己鍛錬、忍耐、執着心などの面で、同僚や後輩に大きな影響を与えました。作品数が少ないので、知られている曲も少ないです。演奏する曲をご存じなくても心配ならさないでください。他のほとんどの方もご存じないと思われます。今回も東京シンフォニアの発見の旅。指揮者の揺るぎない信条による選曲と編曲を、どうぞ会場でお聴き下さい。Mily BalakirevThe music of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, and Borodin is generally well represented in typical concert programmes everywhere. As composers, all of them – even Tchaikovsky – were inspired by the ideals and spurred by the passion of Mily Balakirev, member and spiritual leader of a group of five Russian composers. You only need look at Balakrev's photo on the December programme chirashi to gain an impression of the drive an energy of this man, and perceive the almost hypnotic influence he had over his colleagues.By profession, Rimsky-Korsakov was a naval officer. Mussorgsky was a civil servant. Borodin was a chemist. Balakirev was a mathematician. Tchaikovsky was the only one who could dedicate his time entirely to music. The others, the "Mighty Handful," were dedicated musical amateurs -- lovers of music. They composed as best they could in the time they could manage between the rigorous demands of busy personal and professional lives.Balakirev had enormous passion, dedication and influence over his close group. Curiously, he himself produced but little. His first symphony, which we will realise in our coming programme, took Balakirev 24 years to complete.
