While easily overlooked, the signage that dot our commercial and industrial environments are a vital layer of our social and industrial heritage. The fate of economic capitals such as Singapore is that otherwise permanent urban features rapidly have become ephemera. Based on multiple street surveys, an urban vernacular has emerged in our signage through a combination of 'engineered' letterforms, multilingual and multi-script lettering, and trade-specific idiosyncrasies. Whether lovingly rendered in paint, plaster or plastic forms, Mark's and Vikas' exploration of signs is by turns a sombre reminder of a fast disappearing layer of our urban lexicon as well as a celebration of the rich visual culture that characterizes global cities such as London, Paris, Mumbai and Tokyo. This session promises to enrich and delight participants through an analysis of these signs and an exchange of shared memories. SpeakerVikas KailanjajeVikas Kailankaje is a lecturer in Design Communication at the LASALLE College of the Arts. His professional experience covers visual communication and editorial direction for institutional clients and publishers. Outside of his practice and teaching, Vikas leads walking tours that draw upon local issues and historical intrigue.
