ARCHICRAFT 2018 | Building Biology: Better Spaces for Community and Ecology | 30 Sep

Description

WHAT IS BUILDING BIOLOGY: BETTER SPACES FOR COMMUNITY AND ECOLOGY?

Building Biology is a holistic study of the manmade environment and its impact on human health and ecology. Its principles recognise that homes and buildings should be biologically compatible and ecologically sustainable. This workshop guides participants to “see” invisible pollutants on the electromagnetic spectrum (EMFs) and how they impact human health and ecology:

• Understand the invisible sources of EMFs in their environment, whether at
home or at work
• Evaluate unnecessary exposure in these areas on:
o Human health
o Environmental impact
• Identify tweaks they can make

Participants will have an insight into the science of building biology and how better
spaces can be achieved when we interact with space in a meaningful way that is in balance with human biology and ecology.

INSTRUCTOR

Melanie Chua

Melanie Chua is an editor and the only certified Building Biologist in Singapore and Malaysia. Her interest is in how we perceive and inhabit the invisible world around us with a focus on the relationships between space, health and wellness. She received her certifications from the International Institute for Bau-biologie and Ecology in New Mexico, USA. Melanie believes that the environment we live in dramatically impacts our fundamental health—and is related to the broader well-being of community and ecology. Her approach blends building biology principles with design consciousness to optimise our living spaces in the ‘invisible fields’. She founded Building Biology Asia to showcase building design and traditions that not only create a beautiful space to be in, but help communities and future generations thrive. WHAT IS ARCHICRAFT?

Archicraft in Archifest 2018 is a series of curated workshops, organized in carefully curated architectural space or buildings, that provides the opportunity for participants to delve into a variety of disciplines in society and their interaction with architecture. These series of workshops are aimed at empowering participants to adopt an active role in becoming 'agents for change' in our living environment.

There is a total of 5 workshops to choose from; from learning how building pollutants affect the environment to learning how to compose a thought-provoking architectural photograph or even to growing your very own personal ‘farm’.

Proudly curated by the architecture student society of Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Architecture Student Society (SUTDIO).
