For almost 40 years, the Catholic Welfare Services has been caring for our elderly and staying true to their philosophy of regarding every resident as a Person, not Patient. The massing was influenced and conceived to visually engage the existing Chapel. Sight lines for both the residents’ bedrooms and communal pockets at each level were constructed towards either the chapel or the green sanctuary, and all communal pockets within the development are designed with vistas towards the chapel, thereby establishing a direct and strong visual relationship. The corridors at the periphery of each floor serve as a circulation circuit for the residents, and pockets of greenery along corridors provide bedridden residents visual access to nature. Bedrooms are single-loaded to optimise cross-ventilation within the rooms:Bedrooms are separated from the corridors by a vertical timber screen. The screen provides a balance of enclosure for the residents’ privacy and porosity to facilitate cross ventilation and supervision by care staff. At the external corridor, the bedrooms are enclosed by a wall of operable glass louvers to allow the amount of cross ventilation to be controlled. While there is a terracotta screen facade system to enclose the landscape corridors fronting the bedrooms, the communal pockets are fully open to maximise day lighting. The spaces are designed with sufficient setbacks from the external building edge to allow activities to continue even on rainy days with high wind. Each aspect of the design of St Joseph’s Home places the residents’ well-being at heart, providing for their movements, visual engagement, and comfort levels; enhancing the total quality of care that the sisters and staff can give to the residents.Special Notes for this site:1) No photo-taking in residents' rooms or photo-taking of the residents due to PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act);2) No access to occupied residents' rooms from 7am to 10am. However, there are unoccupied rooms that would be open for the visit.PCF @ Edgefield Plains | LAUD Architects(to be updated - watch this space!)Meandering On The Hill | Aamer Architects(Photo used with permission from Aamer Architects)Form follows site: On a steep odd-shaped hill with existing large trees, this seven bedrooms multi-generational house meanders fluidly upwards over five floors diverting around the very mature trees. Broken down into parts, the massing reduces as it goes higher. The house is intended to stand out whilst not overpowering the context. Private spaces are individual and separated yet easily connected to the common areas of the whole. Voids are strategically carved out to ensure natural light and ventilation to all rooms. The main void, a sunburst waterfall courtyard, is a surprise welcome upon a deep entry from the foot of the hill. “Meandering On the Hill” is an intangible dialog between Architecture and Nature. Respecting the existing landform and landscape, the fluid spaces and organic form create a nebulous inside-outside boundary experience. Meandering on the Hill was recently awarded the Silver Medal in International Design Awards 2017, Category: Architecture - New Residential BuildingTOUR SCHEDULE: (will be updated and subject to changes)0900 - 1030 St Joseph's Home1100 - 1230 PCF @ Edgefield Plains1300 - 1430 Meandering On The Hill Sale of tickets will close 3 days before tour date, or until sold out.Tour sites are subject to change. For student attendees, please present a valid Student Pass for verification on the tour day. Please note that AM and PM tours have overlapping timings.
