Coined by architects Alison and Peter Smithson in the 1950s, and drawing reference from Le Corbusier’s ‘béton brut’ use of raw concrete, Brutalism is part of a Modernist architectural movement of which local structures Pearl Bank Apartments, Golden Mile Tower, and the Golden Mile and People’s Park Complexes are a part. The four buildings embody a particular zeitgeist in 1960s Singapore that was rife with aspirations of new independence, and a buoyant optimism towards defining the country’s future. So how much do you know about Brutalism? And what is so remarkable about the design of Pearl Bank Apartments? This concrete casting workshop brings you on a hands-on discovery to understand the design logic behind these architectural gems. Course informationAll materials are provided. Workshops are capped at 18 people per session. Suitable for ages 12 and up. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. Participants will be split into groups of 2.Please arrive 15 minutes beforehand.The workshop is conducted by Jonathan Poh, Principal Architect and co-founder of PROVOLK ARCHITECTS.How to get thereDrama Box 14A Trengganu Street, S058468 Workshop venue:  top floor Nearest MRT: Chinatown MRT Exit A If you are coming by MRT alight at CHINATOWN Station. Get out by EXIT A, go up the escalator. Walk straight and look out for an eatery with yellow chairs on your right. Once you see that, turn right along the pathway and continue down to end on the right, next to a medicinal/sundries shop. It’s a small door hidden between 2 tourists shops. Ask around for 14 Trengganu Street if you get lost! If you are coming by taxi, ask the driver to enter by Temple Street. It is a short street that is perpendicular to Trengganu Street. Once you are on Temple Street, there is a road hump further down the road. Ask the driver to stop, alight AFTER the road hump on the LEFT of the road. Once you are out, there should be a sundries/medicinal shop on your left. It’s the door right next to that shop. Come up to the top floor and through that door!
