On a hot summer night 22 years ago, 18-year-old Attiya Khan ran through the streets, fearing for her life as she fled her abusive ex-boyfriend Steve. Now, years later, Attiya has asked Steve to meet. She wants to know how he remembers their relationship and if he is willing to take responsibility for his violent actions. This emotionally raw first meeting, filmed by Attiya with Steve’s consent, is the starting point for A Better Man.
For the first time ever, he speaks of the abuse and cracks opens the door to dealing with the past. Illuminating a unique paradigm for domestic violence prevention, A Better Man offers a fresh and nuanced look at the healing and revelation that can happen for everyone involved when men take responsibility for their abuse. The film also empowers audience members to play new roles in challenging domestic violence, whether in their own relationships or as part of a broader movement for social change.

Jasmine Ng
Jasmine Ng is a filmmaker who tells stories across platforms, from film to television, to theatre and site-specific installations (Moveable Feast, Eating Air, SHIRKERS, Lonely Planet Six Degrees, FUTURE FEED, Our Town, In The Silence of Your Heart).She has conceptualised cross-disciplinary works, collaborating with different communities with the support of the Lien Foundation and the Khoo Teck Puat Foundation. She has also commissioned and guided young filmmakers and animators on projects such as the immersive arts experience, PRISM (for the Institute of Policy Studies) and the on-going BOTH SIDES, NOW project – a multi-edition, multi-media installation project exploring issues on death and dying, that has been installed in public spaces such as hospitals and heartland neighbourhoods. Other creative-collabs include those with dance and theatre groups. An advocate for the film and arts community and for the creative industry, she is also one of the co-founders and current president of the Singapore Association of Motion Picture Professionals.
Laura Meehan
Laura Meehan is a programme executive with the Women’s Helpline at AWARE. Laura is part of a dynamic team who support over 3,000 calls per year from women who need information and assistance. She also heads the AWARE Helpline Training Programme which recruits one intake of volunteers per year, preparing them for their role on the helpline by equipping them with the tools to provide non-judgmental support and information on a range of issues.A social worker by qualification, Laura’s previous work was in the field of adult mental health services and adult social care in the United Kingdom. Laura has many years of work experience in private, voluntary and government social services and has worked with a range of people including young people, those with drug and alcohol addiction, people with disabilities, people who have experienced domestic and sexual violence and those involved in the criminal justice system.Her work at AWARE revolves around the Women’s Helpline service and supporting women with various issues, including issues relating to divorce and abuse and violence. She is a passionate advocate of social justice and strongly believes in the principles of equality and human rights.

About the filmmakers
Attiya Khan is a Toronto-based feminist, intimate partner violence survivor and long-time advocate and counsellor for abused women and children. As a writer, activist and speaker, she has become a presenter and panelist for numerous events and conferences related to domestic violence.
Lawrence Jackman is a Toronto-based filmmaker who has worked on many award-winning films, focusing primarily on independent documentaries and dramas. Both as an editor and in his own filmmaking, he is interested in creative storytelling and pushing genre boundaries. In 2011 he directed How Does It Feel, a documentary musical about the importance of creative fulfillment told through the musical pursuits of a singer with cerebral palsy.
