eight Maori female perspectives on the complexity of child abuse. Unfolding
around the funeral of a small boy who died at the hands of his caregiver, the
subtly interlinked vignettes, each set in the same moment in time and each filmed
in a continuous shot, follow one of eight female Maori lead characters as they
come to terms with the tragedy. Waru is
an ambitious and important anthology film not only tackling the tragedy of
child abuse but also highlighting women’s varied roles in society, and

Jaswal was the recipient of the Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Australian Novelist Award for her debut novel Inheritance. Her second novel Sugarbread was shortlisted for the Epigram Books Fiction Prize and the Singapore Literature Prize. She has been a writer-in-residence at the University of East Anglia and Nanyang Technological University. Her internationally acclaimed novel, Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, was a Reese Witherspoon's Book Club pick, with film rights acquired by director Ridley Scott.Alfian Sa'at Alfian Sa’at is a Resident Playwright with W!LD RICE. His published works include three collections of poetry, ‘One Fierce Hour’, ‘A History of Amnesia’ and ‘The Invisible Manuscript’, a collection of short stories, ‘Corridor’, a collection of flash fiction, ‘Malay Sketches’, two collections of plays as well as the published play ‘Cooling Off Day’. Alfian has been nominated 10 times for Best Original Script at the Life! Theatre Awards, eventually winning in 2005 for ‘Landmarks’, in 2010 for ‘Nadirah’, in 2013 for 'Kakak Kau Punya Laki' (Your Sister's Husband) and in 2016 for ‘Hotel’ (with Marcia Vanderstraaten). In 2001, Alfian won the Golden Point Award for Poetry as well as the National Arts Council Young Artist Award for Literature.
