How do we find a way to move forward? Waru presents eight Maori female perspectives on the complexity of child abuse. Unfolding around the funeral of a small boy who died at the hands of his caregiver, the subtly interlinked vignettes, each set in the same moment in time and each filmed in a continuous shot, follow one of eight female Maori lead characters as they come to terms with the tragedy. Waru is an ambitious and important anthology film not only tackling the tragedy of child abuse but also highlighting women’s varied roles in society, and indigenous perspectives.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L6Oq7tWwsY· Screened – New Zealand International Film Festival 2017· Screened – Toronto International Film Festival 2017______________________Post-Screening Discussion with Balli Kaur Jaswal and Alfian Sa'atBalli Kaur JaswalBalli Kaur Jaswal's fiction and non-fiction has appeared in the UK Sunday Express, Cosmopolitan Magazine, The New York Times, Harpers Bazaar and Best Australian Short Stories.
