An era, characterised by low quality goods being made in bulk, increased concentration of population. This was the setting in which Ruskin mulled over what an ideal society, economy, nature and culture should be. The idea of understanding oneself, and living sustainably were the ideas that catapulted the National trust movement, and the arts and crafts movement. As part celebrating John Ruskin’s 200th birthday anniversary, we will be organising a symposium, exhibition. This Active Book Dialogue is part of the pre-event for John Ruskin Study group. The first half of the event will be introduced by Mr Yamazaki Ryo, who is part of the executive committee of the 200th anniversary celebrations. This part will cover the basic introduction of Ruskin. Following, we will then dive into the Active Book Dialogue, reading the “The origin of Community design”, by none other than Mr Yamazaki Ryo. This part of the event will be facilitated by none other than NPO Home’s vi. How can we regain a sense of community within a modern day world that gives priority towards economic growth and exploitation of resources? If you want to think of these questions together, please feel free to join us in this educational journey of Ruskin and his philosophy.**Speakers**Mr Yamazaki RyoCEO of studio-L, Social entrepreneur, Community Designer, Professor and Director of the department of Spatial Design in the Kyoto University of Art and Design, Vice President in RIPS, NPO.Born in Aichi, in 1973. After the university, he worked in SEN, inc., where he developed his skills and knowledge in landscape design advised by Mr. Shosuke Miyake, a founder of this firm. As well, he learnt social organization and relationship management from Dr. Fusayo Asano there.Then he founded studio-L in 2005 and he has continuously offered the innovative solutions for the local problems by inspiring and leading the local communities. He advocates the importance of “Community Design” which he defined as the empowerment of the locals through design to make them happy.
