Caryl Churchill’s classic all-female play is a brilliant critique of British politics and feminism in the 1980s, with its ruthless central character, Marlene, embodying the values of the UK’s first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. In a surreal and hilarious first act, she celebrates a job promotion by holding a restaurant dinner with heroic women characters from across history including a thirteenth century Japanese courtesan, a medieval devil-killer, and a ninth century female Pope. But as the play progresses, we see Marlene in increasingly ‘real’ contexts, from her tough and unforgiving working environment at the Top Girls employment agency, to her surprise return to see her family following six years without contact. As familial ‘skeletons’ are uncovered and an explosive conclusion is reached, Marlene is confronted with some darkly uncomfortable truths about herself, her choices and ethics, and what it means to be a ‘successful’ woman.
