The Lion City Youth Jazz Festival is an annual
youth-musician-focused learning and immersion programme, comprising 6 days of
intensive rehearsals, workshops and a final concert on the last day, under the
guidance of international jazz legends and prominent professional jazz
musicians. This year’s workshop series will feature 5-time Grammy award-winning
Trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker from the United States; Bassist and
composer Jay Anderson (US); Lewis Nash (US-Drums); Antonio Hart (US-Saxophone);
Tom Walsh (Trumpet-UK).
TOM WALSHTom Walsh, aged 26, is
based in London, where he graduated from the Jazz Course at the Royal Academy
Of Music with 1st Class Honours in 2013. In his first year at college, Tom was
the inaugural recipient of the Humphrey Lyttelton Jazz Prize, an
award for outstanding jazz performance. Upon leaving college Tom had also
received other awards including the Wolfson Prize (2012) and the Alumni
Development Award (2013). Shortly after
graduating, in September 2013, Tom was appointed the lead trumpet chair in the
Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. From 2013 to 2017 we worked with the band
alongside international jazz luminaries such as Benny Golson, Branford
Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Bob Mintzer and Mike Stern.
He has also played lead trumpet with the WDR Big Band & Vince Mendoza. Tom
has also played with some of the UK's other top big bands including: The BBC
Big Band, The Stan Sulzmann Neon Orchestra, The Laurence Cottle Big Band, The
Gareth Lockrane Big Band, The Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra, NYJO and
The Mark Nightingale Big Band. In light orchestral work
Tom has played principal trumpet with John Wilson, The RTE Concert Orchestra
and has played with the RPO, Philharmonia, BBC Concert Orchestra and the
English Session Orchestra. In the West End, Tom has played on multiple
shows including Wicked, Sinatra: Live On Stage, Dreamgirls, Show Boat
and Beautiful. In 2013 and 2014 Tom played lead trumpet live on the X Factor
Big Band shows. In pop and commercial music Tom has played and recorded with
the likes of Van Morrison, Blur, Mark Knopfler, Jessie J,
Jamie Cullum, Gary Barlow and Shirley Bassey. In February
2014 Tom co-produced and played a series of concerts with Al Jarreau at
London's famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Having recently returned
from studying with Jerry Hey in Los Angeles, Tom is currently working from his
home studio recording, composing and arranging for multiple projects including
his own horn section. Tom is a Vincent Bach Trumpet endorsing artist.
