Their love of colour, patterns and sheer drama is evidenced in their material culture and beliefs. Join us for a walk through one of the most distinctive Peranakan enclaves in Singapore. Former coconut plantations, atop roofed kampongs and seaside retreat for the wealthy, Katong and Joo Chiat areas are like an exciting dish, with delightful cultures, delicious flavours and rich architectural heritage. Here we will meet some of the local characters and explore their legacy, including pre-war architecture, colourful two storey shophouses and terrace houses with their ornate facades, intricate motifs and ceramic tiles. We will also encounter the Chinese temple of philanthropy and mercy, discover an old parish anglican church with closely-knit community serving for grandfathers to their grandchildren and visit one of Singapore’s oldest Indian temple - a reminder of the neighbourhoods multi-ethnic blend. We will not only check out the architectural gems and stroll past Singapore’s most unusual shophouses, but also mesmerise our tastebuds. In ever changing Singapore there are still a few traditional eateries that have so much to offer !Our Tuesday Small-Group Discovery Walks are aimed at visitors and new Singapore residents, but we find even "old timers" learn a lot. We keep to a max of 10 and pace the walk to take our sultry climate into account; lots of water and air-con stops are included.
