By the time George Takei stepped in front of a television camera for the first time at the age of 22, he had already endured challenges that most of his audiences would never have been able to guess, much less truly comprehend. After a childhood spent behind the barbed wire of United States internment camps, placed there simply for the face he wore, George Takei nurtured―and fulfilled many, many times over―the dream of becoming an actor on television, in movies and on stage in a career that spans five decades. And with this dream arose so many others, including his vital work as a political activist, social commentator, author and powerful internet presence. 　総領事When you first meet Patrick Linehan, you may initially recognize his position, as the U.S. Consul General in Osaka. You may also reflect upon his extensive diplomatic experience as a member of the U.S. Foreign Service and positions at the U.S. Consulate in Sapporo and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo as well as U.S. Embassies in Korea, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada and Finland. But beyond these credentials, you will be struck by a certain something that tells you “This diplomat is different.” And Patrick Linehan would wholeheartedly agree. Both as a diplomat and as an out and married gay man, Linehan, together with his husband Emerson, courageously works towards creating a society that celebrates differences and diversity, educating and inspiring us all with the simple affirmation, “I’m different!”.パトリック・リネハンは、在札幌米国総領事館および在東京米国大使館勤務を経て、現在は駐大阪・神戸米国総領事館で総領事の任務に就いている。総領事の前には外交官として、韓国、ブラジル、ニュージーランド、カナダ、フィンランドの米国大使館で多くの実績を積んできた。公職経験だけを見ると、彼は普通の外交官と同じように見える。しかし彼が多くの外交官と異なるのは、ゲイであることを自ら公表し、結婚相手のエマーソンと共に、人々が「多様性」を認め合う社会作りの大切さを果敢に唱える活動を行っていることである。人々がお互いの違いを尊重して共存できる世界の実現を願って、「人は皆一人一人違う。違うということは素晴らしいことである」というメッセージを発信している。Copyright © 2014 TEDxKyoto
