Hear behind-the-scenes stories about setting up the exhibition, and get a closer look at the drawings, photographs, and sculptures that captivated the 19th-century French public when the ancient Angkor civilisation made its sensational emergence onto the international stage. Please join us to see these masterpieces from Paris, on loan from the Musée national des arts asiatiques-Guimet, and in Singapore for the very first time.   Stephen MurphySenior Curator, Southeast Asia, ACM Stephen holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, specialises in the art and archaeology of early Buddhism in Southeast Asia. He is co-editor of Before Siam: Essays in Art and Archaeology (2014), and regularly contributes papers to leading academic journals.   About the Exhibition The civilisation of Angkor left an artistic legacy that lives on most spectacularly in its architecture and sculpture. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the archaeological complexes are today acknowledged as great masterpieces. But until the late 19th century, they were virtually unknown to the outside world.   In this ACM exhibition, Angkor: Exploring Cambodia’s Sacred City, visitors will see rare Khmer sculptures, along with French drawings, photographs, and memorabilia that tell the story of the French encounter with Angkor and its sensational emergence onto the international stage.   The Asian Civilisations Museum presents this exhibition in collaboration with the Guimet Museum in Paris. To accompany the exhibition, ACM has scheduled an array of programmes and talks related to Angkor and contemporary Cambodian culture, including our Angkor Encore Festival (25–27 May) highlighting Cambodian performing arts.A minimum of 10 people is needed to proceed. Registration closes a day before the tour and tickets are non-refundable if participant is unable to attend. If the event is cancelled, full ticket-price refund will be given.
