The Tamil Diaspora in Pre-Modern Southeast Asia (c.100 CE – 1500 CE) Archaeological, Epigraphic and Literary Testimonies28th April 20183pm – 5pmActivity Room, Indian Heritage CentreThe Tamil-speaking populations of the far south of India and northern Sri Lanka emerge, rather abruptly, in the late centuries BCE as pan-Indian Oceanic carriers of trade.  Archaeological and epigraphic data in the Tamil-Brahmi script from the early centuries CE indicate that Tamil mercantile communities operated from the South China Sea to the Red Sea frontier of Egypt, a trading world spread over 7000 km, a scale hitherto unknown in the ancient world. This talk will focus on the Tamil communities settled in Southeast Asia between the early centuries CE and 1500 CE using literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources. Tamil-Brahmi epigraphs from Phu Kao Thong (2nd century CE) and Khuan Luk Pat (3rd century CE) in southern Thailand represent some of the earliest samples of writing to be recovered from Southeast Asia, suggesting a seminal role for Tamil-speaking seafarers, traders and professionals in the dissemination of writing. Commercial agendas apart, Tamil settlements in Southeast Asia were also motivated, at least in later cases, by diplomatic and matrimonial ties with Southeast Asian polities. The talk will also reviewthe influence of Tamil language and culture on Southeast Asia as well as Southeast Asian contributions to Tamil civilisation.முன்நவீன தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியாவில் புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்கள்(பொ.ஆ 100 முதல் பொ.ஆ 1500 வரையிலான)தொல்லியல், கல்வெட்டியல், இலக்கிய சா​ன்றுகள் 28 ஏப்ரல் 2018பிற்பகல் 3 மணி முதல் 5 மணி வரை நடவடிக்கை அறை, இந்திய மரபுடைமை நிலையம்இந்தியாவின் தென்கோடி, வட இலங்கை ஆகியவற்றின் தமிழ் பேசும் மக்கள், பொது சகாப்தத்திற்கு முந்தைய காலகட்டத்தின் பிந்தைய நூற்றாண்டுகளில், திடீரெனப் பெருமளவில், திரைகடலோடி திரவியம் ஈட்டும் வர்த்தகப்பிரதிநிதிகளாகப் புறப்பட்டனர். பண்டைய உலகில் இதுவரை அறியப்படாததோர் அளவில் தென்சீனக் கடலில் இருந்து எகிப்திய செங்கடல் எல்லை வரையிலான 7000 கிலோமீட்டருக்கு மேற்பட்டதொரு வர்த்தகப் பரப்பில் தமிழ் வாணிபச் சமூகங்கள் பரவி இயங்கியதைப் பொது சகாப்த காலத் தொடக்க நூற்றாண்டுகளின் தமிழ் - பிராமி எழுத்துக்களில் உள்ள தொல்லியல், கல்வெட்டியல்  தகவல்கள் சுட்டுகின்றன. பொது சகாப்தத்தின் ஆரம்ப நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கும் பொ.ஆ. 1500க்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலகட்டத்தில் தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியாவில் குடியேறிய  தமிழ்ச் சமூகங்கள் குறித்த இவ்வுரை, இலக்கிய, கல்வெட்டியல், தொல்லியல் ஆதாரங்களின் உதவியுடன் விவரிப்பதாக அமையும்.   தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியாவில் இருந்து மீட்டெடுக்கப்படும் ஆக முன்னைய எழுத்து மாதிரிகள் சிலவற்றைப் பிரதிநிதிக்கும் தெற்குத் தாய்லாந்தின் ஃபு காவ் தோங் (பொ.ஆ. 2ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு), குவான் லுக் பாட் (பொ.ஆ. 3ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு) ஆகிய பகுதிகளின்  தமிழ்-பிராமி கல்வெட்டுக்கள்,  எழுத்து பரவலாக வேர்விட வித்திடும் வகையில் தமிழ்- பேசும் கடலோடிகள், வர்த்தகர்கள், திறனாளர்கள் போன்றோர் ஆற்றிய  பங்கைக்  காட்டுகின்றன.  வணிக ரீதியிலான முன்னேற்றங்கள் மட்டுமன்றி, தென்கிழக்காசிய அரசியலாளர்களுடன் ஏற்பட்ட  அரசதந்திர, திருமண ரீதியிலான உறவுத் தொடர்புகளாலும் தென்கிழக்காசியாவில் தமிழ்க் குடியேற்றங்கள் ஊக்கமுற்றன. தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியாவில் தமிழ் மொழி, கலாசாரத்தின் தாக்கம் குறித்தும் அத்துடன், தமிழ் நாகரிகத்திற்குத் தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியப் பங்களிப்பு குறித்தும் இவ்வுரை மதிப்பாய்வு செய்யும்.About the SpeakerDr Sureshkumar Muthukumaran is a Postdoctoral Fellow in History at Yale-NUS College. He specialises in the history of connectivity in  ancient Eurasia, with a particular focus on its biological aspect i.e. the anthropogenic spread of flora, fauna, pests, commensals and microbial pathogenic organisms. He completed his MsT in Greek and Roman History at the University of Oxford (2011-2012) and his PhD in History at University College London (2012-2016).டாக்டர் சுரேஷ்குமார் முத்துக்குமரன் யேல்-சிங்கப்பூர் தேசிய பல்கலைக்கழகக் கல்லூரியில் வரலாற்றுத் துறையில் முனைவர் பட்டத்துக்குப் பிந்திய மேற்கல்வி பயில்பவர். அவர் பண்டைய யுரேசியாவின் வரலாற்றுத் தொடர்புநிலையில், குறிப்பாக அதன் உயிரியல் அம்சத் தொடர்பு குறித்து, அதாவது மானிட இனப் பரவல் முயற்சிகளால் பரவும் தாவர, விலங்கினங்கள், பூச்சிகள், கூட்டுவாழ்வு நுண்ணுயிரிகள், நுண்ணுயிர் நோய்க்கிருமியினங்கள் ஆகியவை குறித்த துறையில் சிறப்பாய்வு மேற்கொள்பவர். அவர் ஆக்ஸ்ஃபர்ட் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கிரேக்க, ரோமானிய வரலாற்றில் முதுகலைப் பட்டமும் (2011-2012), லண்டன்  பல்கலைக்கழகக் கல்லூரியில் (2012-2016) வரலாற்றில் முனைவர் பட்டமும்  பெற்றவர்.
