Situated a stone's throw from Orchard Road, this lovely sanctuary of historic shophouses is Singapore’s first designated conservation area. We'll stroll around the neighbourhood’s narrow streets to admire the architecture and feel the past come alive.Kindly arrive 15 minutes before the start of the walk so that the walk can begin on time.AccessibilityDo note that the walking route may contain the following:Kerbs and stepsSeniors and children are welcome to join in the walk.About the walk leaderJane Iyer’s love affair with Asia started on her arrival as a “wee lass” in Singapore (by boat!) in February 1963. A native Brit, life has ensured that she has boomeranged back to Asia - as a trailing teenager in 1970, followed by 2 stints as a trailing spouse from 1999, in the middle of which she sandwiched 6 years in New York City. She’s grasped opportunities to get involved, and sees her volunteer work with Friends of the Museums (FOM) as nothing less than life changing. She served as its President in 2003/4, has guided in 3 museums, coordinated the Explore Singapore! Team, led Study Tours to other parts of Asia and ran film & book groups. An excellent organiser & administrator, she’s a passionate ambassador for her adopted home of Singapore. Particularly interested in heritage & history, she is also a keen supporter of the performing arts. A true citizen of the world, she speaks mother tongue English, excellent Spanish & good French, with a smattering of other languages, eg Portuguese & Italian, poor Malay & almost non existent Chinese – leaving plenty of scope for self improvement!The Elegance of Emerald Hill is part of Jane's Walk Singapore 2018, an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Jane's Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
