“What Kind of World Do You See?”The difficulties of raising a child with a disability in a foreign country, battles with her own mind and body, struggles with friends and family, medical trials related to the birth of her daughter, Seri, and the repeated surgeries on her daughter...The original book, Born(e) (released in Japan as Mikan no Okurimono in 2012), tells the true story of the first eight years with Seri in the form of a memoir from the perspective of Mika Kuramoto herself, a mother and career woman working in a foreign country.This year, the real-life Seri turns 19 years old. In this musical adaptation, we imagine what Seri herself might have felt at each moment, and as we explore the stories of Seri, her mother Mika, and her father Takeharu, we think about what having empathy and coexisting with other people really means.[STORY]Mika and Takeharu have a child while living in New York, a baby girl they name ‘Seri.’ Although they are filled with hope and dreams for the future of their first child, she is born without eyeballs and with intellectual disabilities. The couple is filled with despair and finds themselves at their wits’ end. Mika, the mother, blames herself and worries about what others think, and grows confused and exhausted by her inability to communicate with her daughter.One day, Mika is so distraught that she attempts to throw herself from the roof of their apartment building along with her daughter, but then Seri hears a sound from the bustling city of Manhattan far below them and laughs.
