About this walk
This area around Little India and Farrer Park is the ‘catchment area’ for South Asian workers. This is their home-away-from-home, where they find familiar foods, toiletries, restaurants, roadside stalls, clinics, places of worship, and space to relax, socialise and swap stories. This area has become somewhat less welcoming to workers with the ban on public consumption of alcohol and closure of low-rent housing. Singapore residents tend to avoid the area due to perception that these workers are a potential danger and should be confined to workplace and dormitories. Migrant workers who have time off from work (many don’t, working 15 hours/day with no off days) enjoy their free time here and make this a special and vibrant area.

Kindly arrive 15 minutes before the start of the walk so that the walk can begin on time.

Do note that the walking route may contain the following:
  • Kerbs and steps
  • Sidewalks
  • Busy or noisy vehicle traffic
Seniors are welcome to join the walk.

About the walk leader
Debbie Fordyce is an exco member of Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), and coordinator of The Cuff Road Project, which provides regular meals for male workers awaiting resolution to injury and salary claims.

Walking in Their Sandals is part of Jane's Walk Singapore 2018, an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Jane's Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
