So, how much of an artist and his or her life is reflected in their works? How does one’s choice of storytelling technique influence the subject matter and vice versa? Don’t miss the first-ever Singapore screening of Bergman Island, featuring a series of interviews with Bergman himself, and a post-screening dialogue between Swedish documentarian, Marie Nyreröd, and Singaporean fiction writer, Clara Chow, on the craft and process of a storyteller on film and on paper. This session will be moderated by Genevieve Loh. This SWF POP is co-presented with the Embassy of Sweden. Now, he shows us his world on the desolate and mysterious Baltic island of Fårö. Viewers get to step through the gate that bears the notice - in Swedish, of course - "Private Area. Beware of Dog". No dog has lived there, though, since Liv Ullmann's dachshund left the place over thirty years ago. But that text says that here lives a man who wants to be left alone. A man whose only company is the sea and his own demons.Marie Nyreröd is a reporter and director at the Arts department of SVT, national Swedish Television. In 2004 she made three documentaries with Ingmar Bergman; Bergman and the Cinema, Bergman and the Theatre and Bergman and Fårö Island. The three parts were edited into the international feature film, called Bergman Island. The film has been screened in over twenty countries. After the screening of the documentaries, Marie became one of Ingmar Bergman’s telephone friends, who he used to call every week. During The Bergman Year 2018, Marie will present new documentaries connected to Ingmar Bergman.Clara Chow is the author of story collections Dream Storeys (2016) and Modern Myths (2018). Her fiction has also appeared in the likes of Asia Literary Review and Prairie Schooner. In 2016, she was a writer-in-residence at Toji Cultural Centre, South Korea.
