In a world where information technology has become a necessity in our daily lives, communication is made much easier. Various pieces of information are out in the open for everyone to read and perceive. Text messages replace voices, mails are delivered within seconds. Are there any hidden codes left unread? One of the beauty of the visual arts are the messages presented in codes; some are obvious while others need a little more time to decode. What are the codes hidden in every piece of art? What do they represent? What are their functions and who are these strokes, lines, images and colours targeted at? What is the significance of such codes in our lives? How can these codes be represented in the visual arts?MELAYUMINATI features works developed by Rafaat Haji Hamzah since his relocation to Jogjakarta. This exhibition is a product of his observation, from a distance, of what it means to live in a city like Singapore. It is an exploration of how we position ourselves within the social, political and economic climate of Southeast Asia and what it means to be a Singaporean -- more specifically -- Singaporean Malay. Come and be surprised from what you witness within the lines, the strokes, the colours and the symbols.* The works presented are done on paper with a mixed medium of oil pastel, acrylic, charcoal and pen.
