Various pieces of information are out in the open for everyone to read and perceive. Text messages replace voices, mails are delivered within seconds. Are there any hidden codes left unread? One of the beauty of the visual arts are the messages presented in codes; some are obvious while others need a little more time to decode. What are the codes hidden in every piece of art? What do they represent? What are their functions and who are these strokes, lines, images and colours targeted at? What is the significance of such codes in our lives? How can these codes be represented in the visual arts?MELAYUMINATI features works developed by Rafaat Haji Hamzah since his relocation to Jogjakarta. This exhibition is a product of his observation, from a distance, of what it means to live in a city like Singapore. It is an exploration of how we position ourselves within the social, political and economic climate of Southeast Asia and what it means to be a Singaporean -- more specifically -- Singaporean Malay. Come and be surprised from what you witness within the lines, the strokes, the colours and the symbols.* The works presented are done on paper with a mixed medium of oil pastel, acrylic, charcoal and pen.  Rafaat Haji Hamzah   Mostly known for his distinctive style of writing and performance, Rafaat Haji Hamzah is a household name in both the television and theatre scenes in Singapore. Graduated from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Fine Arts), his talent stretches from acting to poetry writing, scriptwriting, art directing, producing and directing. Rafaat had penned notable theatre pieces including Merdeka (2000) and Hablur (1997), which was nominated for ‘Best Theatre Script’ in Anugerah Persuratan, the Malay Literary Award 1997/1998. Rafaat’s poems are bold, succinct and echo issues close to the heart of his people. Rafaat’s first compilation – Yang Bilang – was published in December 2007. He has recently set up a poetry performance duo ‘POESY BAROE’ and leading a collective made up of singerpoet-songwriter ‘DUTABASA’. Rafaat now lives in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
