He is referred to by fans and fellow performers alike as the Aniki (アニキ"big brother") of the anison, or anime music genre. After making his debut in July 1968, Hayakawa recorded the opening theme for anime and tokusatsu like Genshi shonen Ryu, Mazinger Z, Captain Tsubasa, Captain Harlock, Masked Rider Series in the following years. Until now, he has recorded over 1200 songs for various soundtracks as well as original singles and albums. 2018 marks his 50th anniversary since his debut.
