This is the primary question driving the research of Imaad Majeed’s sample-based music-making project “KANNOORU”. The artist invites the audience to a close-listening session that will explore the archive of Sufi sonics from Sri Lanka that they have gathered since 2017. We will listen intently to devotional songs and folk songs of the Muslim community of Sri Lanka, as well as a demonstration of their sampling process. The artist will also share insights gleamed from their readings around Muslim and Sufi communities on the island. ABOUT THE SPEAKERImaad Majeed is a multidisciplinary artist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They are Director and Curator of the trilingual performance platform "KACHA KACHA". They are one part of the artist collective "The Packet" and VJ/DJ of "Packet Radio" (SUPR FM). They enjoy making playlists,  and writing about musicians from Sri Lanka for the international music blog "beehype". They are Project Coordinator and Co-Curator of Thattu Pattu, a platform for music from the fringes of Sri Lanka. They are presently working on "KANNOORU", exploring Sri Lankan Sufi/Muslim identity, community, memory, erasure, ancestry and mysticism through sample-based music, a project supported by a grant from Experimenter's Generator Co-operative Art Production Fund.  ABOUT "VILLAGE OF RAFTS"Since the 19th century, the Indian Ocean littoral has come to be submerged under larger global flows of colonialism and nationhood. However, in the last two decades, with the initiation of major infrastructure projects, it has resurfaced as a site for open contestation. Neoliberal expansionism, resource use and geopolitics have dominated recent mappings of the littoral. Today, highly specialised capital, infrastructural, ecological, and migratory flows occupy the sea lanes from Canton to Zanzibar. Despite these ‘newer’ neoliberal algorithms, its peoples have continued to chart their own cultural and aesthetic visions, highlighting a need to discuss how the human agency evolves across this terraqueous terrain. In a series of conversations grounded in contemporary practice, Village of Rafts lays the groundwork for an aspirational network across the Indian Ocean littoral.TIME 8–9pm  |  VENUE The Engine Room, Level 1, SAM at Tanjong Pagar DistriparkEVENT ADMINISTRATION INFORMATION Programme is by registration only.
